a praise chorus...

...rather, 150 of them. (dang. that's a spoiler.)

thought one: then
when i was in high school, an era i have generally blotted out from my ruminations for my psychological well-being, my favorite song was entitled A Praise Chorus.

the name was misleading, although somewhatly appropriate. it was a praise chorus of sorts, but of a very self-aware, carpe diem type rather than the self-forgetting, carpe Deum kind.

basically:
"Things are never gonna be the way you want, where's it gonna get you acting serious?"
"Are you gonna live your life wonderin' standing in the back lookin' around?
Are you gonna waste your time thinkin' how you've grown up or how you missed out?"

good. true. better than metallica.
the best my angsty, self-absorbed little heart could groove to.
but so very elementary.

thought two: now

please allow a tribute... to a book of tributes.
the best our race (ie: human) has been capable of.
not something lost i unearthed, but messengers from God that have many a time unearthed me.

thought three: #57 on my thankful list: the book of Psalms
(in metaphorical fashion. feel free to join in.)

Blessed be God for His poetry.

...a life-saving device when up over your head in depression.
...the articulation you seek when your happy heart explodes within you.
...your defense plea when wrong.
...your prosecuting argument when oppressed.
...the stinging comback you were looking for the shut up your enemy's[ies'] fat mouth[s].
...best of all-time love songs to the Lover of your soul.
...thanksgiving hymns to the Inventor of light, children, and the five senses.
...rehab for the soul by the Healer who loved it back to life.
...the memories you want your children never to forget.
...the call of a grown-up child to his friends to "Come and see what I found!"
...our prayer book and hymnal, poetry, and soteriological history textbook, in lyrical form.
...our reply to creation's questions, declarations, and exclamations.
...our thank-you note for consciousness.
...our complaint filed against the Fall.
...our rebellious anthems against depravity.
...God's lack of panic at our dustiness.
...our instruction manual for burden-casting.
...why we don't need valium... or vodka.
...the best efforts of God's fan club.
...firm hands ahold of us when on the brink of insanity.
...Rembrandt for our apprenticed sketches...Mozart for our earnest whistles.
...soul food when nauseated by pop tripe.
...identity when struck with amnesia.
...good news from a far land.
...update on Zion when weary in Babylon.
...blunt poetry in a society of doublespeak.
...opera in the ghetto.
...your mom's meat and potatoes after too long spent at salad bars.
...emergency manual/ first-aid kit in the worst case scenario.
...family in a clan war.
...the exclamation point in a world of declarative sentencess.
...the best news i've heard all day.

finally,
O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together...
for i sought the Lord and He heard me and delivered me from all my fears.
They looked to Him and were radiant, and their faces were not ashamed.

O taste and see that the Lord is good!
Blessed is the man who trusts in Him.
